That's not hype — it's what I see every day working with AI-assisted development. But here's what most people miss: **hourly billing punishes speed.** The better your tools, the faster you ship, the less you earn. That's a broken incentive. So I don't do it. And if you're hiring anyone to build software in 2026, you should think carefully about whether they do. * * * ## The Surgeon Rule A surgeon doesn't charge less for finishing in two hours instead of six. You're not paying for time on the table — you're paying to walk out alive. Software works the same way. What matters is the outcome: a product that works, deployed, monitored, and ready for real users. How fast it gets there should be a feature, not a discount. * * * ## The Real Question: What Are You Actually Buying? Everyone can build a demo now. AI tools can generate a working prototype in an afternoon. The barrier to entry for "something that looks like an app" has never been lower. So what separates a demo from a product? **The last mile.** The 10% of the work that determines whether your software survives contact with reality: - Authentication that handles the edge cases tutorials skip - Payment flows that work when cards decline and webhooks fire twice - Database architecture that doesn't collapse under real load - Deployment that's reproducible, not "it works on my machine" - Monitoring that tells you what broke before your users do - Security that passes an actual audit This is where experience matters — not the ability to write code, but the judgment to know what code to write, what architecture to choose, and what shortcuts will cost you later. It's the accumulated pattern recognition from decades of shipping production software at companies like Amazon, Netflix, and Yahoo. * * * ## Pricing for Outcomes, Not Effort I price based on what you're getting, not how long it takes me. Every project is different. Some need a focused sprint with just me and AI tools. Others need designers, additional developers, product thinkers — whatever the situation requires. I bring in the right people for the right problem. There's no fixed team, no bloated overhead, no one-size-fits-all staffing model. What stays constant is the approach: **scope the outcome, price the outcome, deliver the outcome.** Whether that takes two weeks or twelve, whether it's me solo or a small assembled team, you're paying for a production product — not a timesheet. The traditional model — a building full of people billing hours across months — carries enormous overhead. Project management, coordination, office space, junior developers learning on your dime. Most of that cost isn't building your product. It's maintaining the organization that builds products. We skip that. You get senior-level execution, AI-augmented speed, and a team shaped exactly to the problem at hand. Nothing more, nothing less. * * * ## Building Is Chapter One The real relationship starts after launch. Software isn't a project — it's a living system. It needs monitoring, iteration, security updates, performance tuning, and someone who understands the codebase when things need to change. That ongoing partnership is where the real value compounds. Building the product gets you to market. Running it keeps you there. * * * ## The Honest Version The economics of software development have fundamentally shifted. AI hasn't eliminated the need for experienced builders — it's amplified what experienced builders can do. The gap between "someone with AI tools" and "someone with AI tools _and_ 30 years of production experience" has never been wider. I'd rather earn a long-term relationship through fair pricing and exceptional delivery than optimize for a single invoice. The build is how we start.
